Back in 2004, Governor Granholm appointed the Michigan Medicaid Long-Term Care Task Force. It was charged with the duty to examine the long-term care (LTC) system and make recommendations to improve quality, expand the reach of home- and community-based services and reduce barriers to an efficient and effective continuum of LTC services in Michigan.  The Task Force published a number of recommendations such as person-centered planning, “money follows the person” principles and the creation of “single point of entry” (SPE) agencies. Legislation (House Bill 5389 – Public Act 234 of 2006) was signed on December 31, 2006 that authorized a demonstration project for SPE.

The Single Point of Entry (SPE) agencies are intended to be highly-visible and trusted sources of information and assistance about long-term care, aiding Michigan residents with planning and access to needed services & supports, in accordance with their preferences.  What does this mean for seniors?  What does this mean for the organizations and companies that provide long term care services for seniors?  Will SPEs help assure appropriate placement?  Will referrals be easier?  Is this just a new level of bureaucracy? Or, will it help save money? How will quality be assured?

What other issues are currently of concern to the growing population of seniors?  How does the state plan to deal with its budget deficit in regard to funding long term care programs and services?  These issues affect you (or will eventually!) and your family members – join us to learn more!
